AMSTERDAM--
A Dutch technology company has breathed life into a project to rid the Internet of suffixes such as .com, and instead offer single names which can be countries, company names or fantasy words.

Such a system, which enables countries, individuals and firms to have a Web address consisting of a single name, offers flexibility and is language and character independent.

'The plan is to offer names in any character set,' said Erik Seeboldt, managing director of Amsterdam-based UnifiedRoot."

CBS News | The Internet's Bold Second Act | October 11, 2005 14:00:05: "This is a far different boom from the dotcom craze of the late 1990s. EU optimistic over wider governance of Internet

Internet News Article | Reuters.com: "By Huw Jones

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission hopes a meeting next week will come up with an agreement to allow governments more direct influence over the domain name system that guides traffic around the Internet.

A U.N. report has put forward a more multi-national approach to running the Internet which serves a billion users worldwide, saying this would be more democratic and transparent, a view the 25-nation European Union shares.

Day-to-day handling of domain names is done by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a California-based non-profit organization created by the U.S. Commerce Department.

ICANN's governments committee has only an advisory role."

"Domain name speculators are shutting up shop."
BBC News: Wednesday, 2 January, 2002, 13:19 GMT

"The net has shrunk ever so slightly. For only the second time ever, an authoritative monthly survey of the number of sites on the net has found fewer sites online than in the previous month. The fall has been put down to a drop in the number of registered domains. Despite the drop, the net remains hugely popular, and there are now over 36m sites in cyberspace."
